Sebsebe Demissew

Sebsebe Demissew, a professor in the Department of Plant Biology and Biodiversity Management at the College of Natural and Computational Sciences, Addis Ababa University (ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0123-9596), earned his Ph.D. in Systematic Botany from Uppsala University (Sweden) in 1985. His expertise encompasses biodiversity, ethnobotany, ecology, and systematics, with a focus on Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa. For over two decades, he led the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea project in which over 6,000 vascular plant species are documented, and he described numerous new species to science. He has published seven books and over 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
Prof. Sebsebe’s significant contributions to science have been honored with numerous prestigious awards, including:
• The 2022 Linnean Society Medal (Botany)
• The 2021 José Cuatrecasas Medal for Excellence in Tropical Botany
• The 2020 “Prof. Luigi Tartufari” International Prize for Biological Science (shared with Prof. Stefano Gianni)
He collaborates extensively with the UK, European Union, and African research institutions.
